Object Oriented Analysis and Design

Open Enrollment Date: Contact BIS for latest public schedule

In-House Scheduled: As Needed

Course Description

In the last few years, many books have appeared on the topic of object-oriented analysis and design. These books explore the basic issues and techniques for developing systems using object orientation. This seminar presents the fundamental notions that underlie all OO approaches. In building this foundation, the UML will be explained and its various diagrams will be examined and compared. Since no one diagram has all the answers, various ways of choosing and interrelating them will be explored. Once the basic foundation is built, new and advanced topics will be presented. Extending the foundation in this way provides students with a more robust understanding of OO than is currently possible with existing approaches. This extended foundation will also enable the students to evolve their own techniques in the future-going beyond the OO paradigm as we now know it.

This seminar provides a comprehensive guide to exploiting object orientation, including independent evaluations of the latest directions and new products. These products include OO-CASE tools, OO languages, OO development environments, OO databases, and emerging standards-including the latest work being done in the OMG's Object A&D Task Force. In addition, it presents a foundation for understanding any object-oriented approach for business reengineering, strategic planning, analysis, design, and implementation. A migration path from conventional approaches to the OO approach is also discussed.

After participating in the seminar, students will be able to make better practical use of object-oriented techniques and products. Additionally, students will have a sound understanding of what future developments to expect and how to devise strategies to accommodate new tools and techniques. No prerequisite knowledge or training is required for this seminar. Duration - 4 Days

Target Audience

This course has been designed for data architects, programmers, analysts, designers, project managers, and end-users who are directly involved in systems development and business analysis.

Participant Objectives

  • How to compare and contrast the various approaches to object-oriented analysis-including the "Unified" (UML) approach and other new OMG A&D standards.
  • How to think and communicate within an object-oriented context.
  • When and why the object-oriented approach should be used.
  • Which techniques of object-oriented analysis have been successfully tried and tested.
  • How to successfully customize your own OO approach.
  • How to employ the object-oriented philosophy to evolve conventional systems analysis.
  • How to conceptualize system requirements using an object-oriented approach that leads to sound design and programming efforts.
  • How to apply object-oriented concepts and techniques during systems analysis and design.
  • How the object-oriented approach differs from-and is similar to-conventional approaches, such as entity-relationship modeling, data-flow diagrams, and relational databases.
  • How to expand a repository or data warehouse to include object-oriented concepts.
  • Which new advanced object-oriented techniques can be used to extend conventional object-oriented practices.
  • How to use an object-oriented approach to business process reengineering (BPR) and strategic planning.
  • How to make the transition from object-oriented analysis to implementation.
  • What automated tools are available to support the object-oriented approach.
  • Which OO environments are hot, such as CORBA, distributed objects, Java, ActiveX, and Netscape.
  • What are the critical success factors for object-oriented projects.
